What does the perfect Valentine’s Day celebration look like to you? Nowadays, displays of love seem to come in many different forms, from sun-drenched trips abroad to snazzy combinations of wine and cheese and grapes. With social media on a constant upward incline, it can often seem like some people speak a different love language to the rest of us. It used to be that a quiet dinner out of the house, characterised by irregular eye contact, sustained lapses of giggles, and, hopefully, an unsplit bill, would cut it. The exchange of some gifts gaining toothy grins from recipients and a scattering of appreciation all round. Of course, this format for a date would still swoon many (myself included). I do, though, think that sometimes contemporary celebrations go a little over the top.

In this day and age, where romantic gestures are broadcasted to millions and public praise is a currency of sorts, it can be a little tricky navigating intention. This is why I think its important to be mindful of the little things, especially in relationships, and appreciate those inexpensive, but rich in thought, actions that shine through from your partner. This is also super relevant with the limits of people’s finances at the moment, because while some love may be priceless, unfortunately we don’t all have the wallet for extreme shows of affection.

Perhaps this Valentine’s Day, you can leave off the bells and whistles, and have some genuine down-time at home, just the two of you. This is my personal favourite way to spend some bonding time, whether that be with a romantic partner or a good friend, and that makes it the perfect Valentine’s date in my book. Whether you’re looking to avoid busy crowds, save some money, or simply enjoy the intimacy of your own space, I’m hoping this handy guide helps you plan a memorable, thoughtful, and romantic evening for you to share with someone special.

Let me set the scene…

It might be a nice to set up a little surprise for your significant other with a curated space, lined with love. I recommend introducing some equally plush and attractive soft furnishings into your living space to create a charming place for the pair of you to enjoy each other’s company in surround comfort. Arrange cosy cushions and textured throws around your room, perhaps into a snuggly den or nest, creating a little at-home escape where you can relax. Dim the lights and light some candles for an inviting atmosphere that is both aesthetically pleasing and super cosy.

Set the mood with your favourite songs

Music is essential for setting the mood. Proven to stimulate many areas of your brain, music can greatly help you bond with others and encourage conversation. It’s a good idea to take some time and create a playlist of all your joint favourite songs. Whether you’re in the mood for classic romantic ballads or chilled tunes which you can relax to, choosing the correct music will massively enhance your evening and make it even more special.

Cooking with your partner

In my experience, cooking together can be a fun activity that is great for getting to know one another. When cooking with a partner or friends, I find this is a productive time to explore each other’s culinary preferences and tastes, and just get to know each other a little better in general. This is a fun and fulfilling activity that brings people closer while working towards a common goal. Some of my favourite memories have been made in the kitchen while preparing a meal with others, usually because it’s a great chance to share tips about cooking and some practical skills. This is also a fabulous time to encourage creativity and develop your relationship while working in a team.

Plan a simple yet delicious meal and divvy up the tasks so as to avoid any unnecessary stress. Cooking can be a shared experience that brings some fun to an evening and lets you bond before sitting down to enjoy each other’s company over some good food.

Embrace a binge

Curling up on the couch with your Valentine for a cosy binge is a delightful way to celebrate love and togetherness. Dim the lights and snuggle under your cushions and throws to create a cosy and intimate atmosphere. Choose a movie or TV show that both of you enjoy sets the stage for shared laughter, heartfelt moments, and perhaps even a few tears. Whether it's a romantic classic, a light-hearted comedy, or a thrilling drama, this is yet another great chance to further bond. I recommend pausing periodically to share your thoughts and theorise what’s going to happen next. Don’t forget the popcorn!

A match made in heaven

Get your game face on to end the night on a high. Playing some entertaining games together, be that an adventurous boardgame or a playful night of trivia, can be a great chance to let loose and have some light-hearted fun. I personally love a simple yet exciting game of cards, a super versatile activity that anyone can play, and most people have a pack lying around somewhere. Games are said to promote communication and teamwork which is great for relationships and keeps things lively. End the night on a laugh and enjoy some cheery fun as a pair. This is a great way to close the night with lots of laughs!

With a little effort and creativity, you can turn your home into a cosy haven fit for a romantic Valentine’s Day date night. The key is to focus on creating a warm and intimate atmosphere, considering your partner’s tastes, and enjoying some downtime together where you can celebrate your connection. Cheers to a memorable and love-filled Valentine’s Day, from us to you!
